How to groom a matted dog. Apply coconut oil all over the matted area. Start by placing a small amount of dog toothpaste on your finger and spreading it across the teeth for a few seconds. Depending how badly matted the dog is then you will need to either cut the area with scissors or get yourself a dematting comb or rake and work the knots out if they are not too bad. There are a couple of ways in which you can use coconut oil to remove mats and tangles from dog hair. Gently brush the coat using a dematting comb or brush. If the mat isn t too bad spray it with detangler solution and use a comb to slowly work the mat free.
This will soften it and give it some elasticity. Once the dog lets you work your finger in his mouth for 20 30 seconds you can graduate to gauze or finger toothbrushes from the pet store. Distribute the oil all over the fur. Next using the fingers on your non dominant hand create a barrier between the blade and the dog s skin.
To begin apply a detangling spray to the hair. Hold the mat splitting tool in your dominant hand.
